About STEP
STEP is the global professional association for practitioners who specialise in family inheritance and succession planning. We work to improve public understanding of the issues families face in this area and promote education and high professional standards among our members. STEP members help families plan for their futures, from drafting a will to advising on issues concerning international families, protection of the vulnerable, family businesses and philanthropic giving.

About the Role

The Qualified Practitioner Route is an essay-based route to membership for trust and estate practitioners who have established themselves in their field (at least 5 years’ practical experience and a professional qualification). This route allows practitioners to demonstrate their knowledge through the submission of three essays of approximately 5000 words in length. Essays are based on topics that are published annually on the STEP website. Upon successful completion of the QP route candidates are eligible to apply for Full Membership, which includes the right to use the TEP designation.

STEP is recruiting multiple Essay Question Setters to contribute to a bank of essay questions on an annual basis. Questions may focus on a specific practice area (e.g. Tax, Law) or may incorporate multiple issues. Questions should be accessible or adjustable for candidates from a wide range of jurisdictions.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Agreeing a timetable with the STEP Qualified Practitioner Committee for drafting, reviewing and finalising questions and mark scheme
  • Producing one (or more) question(s) based on relevant and current issues facing TEPs, and with sufficient depth to encourage an answer of approximately 5000 words
  • Producing a corresponding mark scheme which indicates how marks should be allocated by an independent examiner
