Joining STEP in Australia: 5 Years’ Experience

Two pathways are available for those with 5 years’ experience; the STEP QP Route, whereby practitioners can demonstrate their knowledge via 3 essays, and the Accredited Specialist Route which uses prior accreditations to prove knowledge.

Qualified Practitioner Route

Professionals with a minimum five years’ experience can become a Full STEP Member by demonstrating their practical knowledge. Applicants for membership under this route need to research, prepare and submit three essays of approximately 5,000 words each on topics approved by STEP Australia.

The essays will be assessed by a panel of adjudicators approved by STEP Australia. The three essays need to be completed within four years.

Requirements: Applicants should have either a professional qualification and a minimum five years’ relevant professional experience or a minimum 10 years’ relevant professional experience to be accepted onto the QP route.

Next STEPs: Apply now to the Qualified Practitioner route or learn more by visiting the QP homepage. Thesis paper registration will be available in Australia from January 2017. For any queries, please e-mail

If you do not see a membership route to suit your qualifications and experience, please email

Accredited Specialist

Professionals who have gained accreditation as a specialist in Wills & Estates/Succession Law in New South Wales, Queensland or Victoria can use this as a route to Full STEP membership.

Next STEPs: If you meet the above criteria, please complete and return the Accredited Specialist Application Form (PDF 166KB)  to your local branch.

Please note: All applicants for any route will also need to complete a Professional Standards Awareness case study within their first year of membership, as part of the CPD requirement.
