STEP Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising

 

This qualification is a collaboration between STEP and Central Law Training (CLT).

What are the entry requirements?

The course will be of interest to anyone working within a family business from within the bounds of their own profession of origin, whether they are a lawyer, solicitor, attorney, accountant, trust officer, trust and estate planner, financial planner, private banker, wealth manager, family office executive or a member of a multi-disciplinary team. This Advanced Certificate is also relevant for family business employees, owners and next generations.

Non-members of STEP who enrol on this Advanced Certificate become student members of STEP whilst studying. Upon successful completion of the qualification you can become an Affiliate of STEP or go on to study the Diploma, which provides a route to full STEP membership.

What does the programme cover?

Completing this Advanced Certificate will enable you to:

  • Understand the complexities of the family business context
  • Analyse the family enterprise, including governance issues and sources of conflict
  • Assess the needs of the family enterprise and make recommendations for action
  • Apply a range of proven tools to help the family business achieve its objectives
  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge expected of a competent family enterprise advisor operating from within the bounds of their own profession of origin

Workshops

There will be a one-and-a-half-day workshop for this course. In order to pass the Advanced Certificate you must attend the workshop and complete the associated assignment.

Workshops will be held in:
London, Edinburgh, Geneva, New York and Toronto.

Introduction from STEP

The need to develop a competent advisory capacity for family enterprises, within professional firms, is a new area for professional education which sits naturally with STEP and its growing portfolio of structured learning. Much of the work STEP members do focuses on advising family businesses with wealth structuring and succession planning issues. This Advanced Certificate aims to enhance this advisory capacity, for both STEP members and other professionals, by helping the advisor build the complex mix of competencies required to offer an effective and wide-ranging service to the family business.

The Advanced Certificate will cover key aspects of family enterprise systems, providing a deeper understanding of how best to work with a family enterprise, from the first meeting with the client, setting agendas and planning, to structuring the business and identifying and managing issues within the family. The course will provide an understanding of both simple family enterprises as well as more complex multigenerational families.
