60-second interview with Ellen Kratzer
What does your firm do?
Fiduciary Trust International has specialised in private wealth management since 1931. We manage global investments and act as trustee of trusts for families throughout the world.
What is the most important thing STEP does, in your opinion?
STEP is a unique community that brings top professionals together to learn from each other.
STEP recently launched new Values. Can you share any examples of how you have demonstrated one or more of these in your professional life/your involvement with STEP/interactions with clients?
STEP has created a multi-disciplinary community that gives its members the opportunity to meet and work with top professionals worldwide. It is not only a very supportive group, but also a fantastic go-to resource.
You were recently given a Founder’s Award. What does this mean to you?
It is truly an honour to have been nominated for this award by STEP New York and to be recognised by my peers. Through STEP, I have had an opportunity to work with some amazing people. Everything I have done as a STEP volunteer, starting as a member of the Program Committee in New York, has been a joy.
How and why did you get involved with STEP?
I thank my friends in the trusts and estates community who encouraged me to join. STEP’s mission of providing opportunities for education and networking was very appealing.
What benefits has it brought you?
STEP has increased my knowledge base and expanded my network of contacts, all of which has helped me to navigate this increasingly complex world.
What do you feel are the main challenges facing your branch or region at the moment, and how are you planning to deal with them?
The last year has been difficult for everyone. The US branches have done an incredible job in moving to virtual events. Now that we have this capability, we can continue to offer programming to a broader audience. The networking is a bit more challenging. It will be nice when we can all be together again!
What do you most like about your job?
The people! I have wonderful colleagues and the opportunity to work with the most interesting clients.
.. and what do you feel is most worthwhile?
My career has been an endless learning curve, and whenever anything has an international aspect, it’s just that much more interesting. I love helping clients to achieve their goals and realise their dreams.
What would you say to a young person thinking of a career in this industry?
If you want a career that is intellectually challenging and you want to meet interesting people, this could be the path for you!
Where do you see future growth, both in terms of sectors and jurisdictions?
People will always need investment management and they will always need fiduciaries. In the US, Delaware will continue to be a top quality, professional jurisdiction for trusts.
Which social media channels do you use and why?
I use LinkedIn for business, but I can’t wait to go back to in-person meetings!
