60‐second interview with Richard Joynt

The STEP Private Client Awards are the most important awards as they are judged by our peers and backed by such a respected international organisation, says Richard Joynt of Ocorian Jersey.

What is your role within your firm?

I am the Head of the Family Office team.

How did it feel to win a STEP Private Client Award last year, for Multi-Family Office Team of the Year?

It was fantastic! The whole team was really appreciative.

Why is winning a STEP PCA important to your firm?

We consider the STEP Awards to be the most important private client award as they are judged by our peers and backed by such a respected international organisation.

What are the main challenges facing your organisation at the moment?

Clients are becoming more international and their affairs are becoming more complex. This creates a need for greater sophistication, efficiency and quality of service.

How will you deal with these challenges?

We have made a series of acquisitions in new jurisdictions to bring a more global reach to our clients, which they like. We have also worked hard to create specialists who can respond to the increased complexity we see in client work.

What do you like best about your job?

I would say helping our clients achieve their ambitions - they are so pleased when we really help them!

.. and what do you feel is most worthwhile?

In my view, supporting our clients' charitable ambitions. Wealthy people can often make significant changes in the world and it is great to be a small part of that.

What would you say to a young person thinking of a career in this industry?

I’d recommend getting experience across different teams and disciplines. Once you know which area is going to suit you, work out which qualification supports this best.

Where do you see future growth, both in terms of sectors and jurisdictions?

We see a lot of work coming from the Middle East. However, the industry is becoming more international every year - recent client wins have been from families based in Russia and Australia.

Which social media channels do you use and why?

LinkedIn. I find it a really very valuable tool in creating and maintaining business connections.
