History

STEP was founded in 1991 by George Tasker after his letter to an industry magazine calling for the creation of local forums of practitioners was met with huge enthusiasm and support.

In July 1991, an inaugural meeting was held in Baker Street in London, which appointed the first STEP Council, and later that month STEP was registered as a Private Limited Company. The first Council meeting took place in September 1991.

We quickly grew, establishing local branches first in England and Wales, then the rest of the UK, Switzerland and the Crown Dependencies, before expanding to Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and beyond.

By 2000, we had developed into a full-scale worldwide professional association, offering a range of qualifications and an extensive array of services for our growing membership, including conferences, seminars and lectures; publications and websites; as well as working with governments and regulatory authorities all over the world to examine the likely impact of any proposed changes, providing technical advice and support and responding to consultations.
