60-second interview with Beatrice Puoti

Beatrice Puoti, 18/5/2020

Beatrice Puoti is a Partner at Burges Salmon in Bristol, UK.

What is your role within your firm?

I’m the Head of the Private Wealth Sector at Burges Salmon.

How did it feel to win a STEP Private Client Award last year?

We were simply delighted to win Private Client Legal Team of the Year (large firm). It is the award to win in our industry because of the calibre of the competition, the thorough judging process and the fact that it’s fully international.

Why is winning a STEP PCA important to your firm?

It is great to have the team recognised in this way. Everyone works so hard to allow us to achieve the best possible client service. It showcases the complexity of our work, the strength of our team and boosts our reputation.

What are the main challenges facing your organisation at the moment, and how will you deal with them?

We are in a very competitive industry, with many excellent law firms, so we strive to employ the best lawyers with the best technical ability. There is also uncertainty in the UK and overseas markets, with many new regulations that affect our clients and the way we work.

What do you like best about your job?

What I really enjoy is client work, including looking after clients, the intellectual stimulation it brings and working with people in the sector who are as enthusiastic as I am.

.. and what do you feel is most worthwhile?

What’s worthwhile to me is looking after clients for 25 years and seeing their families grow, develop and progress, and knowing that I’ve helped them along the way. It’s important to me to know I’ve helped and enabled clients to make a difference, increasingly through their philanthropic efforts.

What would you say to a young person thinking of a career in this industry?

You have to be very good on the technical front and you need to like people. I’d say you really need to love this job to succeed.

Where do you see future growth, both in terms of sectors and jurisdictions?

There will be an increasing amount of regulation to comply with. We will continue to offer advice to protect family assets for future generations. We will see more international trust advice given, and more trust litigation as we need to look after beneficiaries in different ways around the world.

In terms of jurisdictions, Asia continues to be an obvious choice but Africa and the Middle East as well, and we are engaged with all of these areas.

Which social media channels do you use and why?

As a firm we use LinkedIn and Twitter. I personally focus on LinkedIn, as I know that’s where I can engage with other professionals in the industry.
