60-second interview with Saskia Lust

Saskia Lust, 27/8/2019

Saskia Lust TEP is a Partner at Loyens & Loeff in Brussels.

What does your firm or organisation do?

Our business and private wealth team at Loyens & Loeff is composed of expert attorneys in civil and tax law. We assist private clients at every stage. In their business lives, we assist them with tax structuring and possible investments (e.g. in real estate or private equity). With regard to their private wealth, we help them with optimising assets, as well as their pensions, wills, donations, investments and financial transfers.

We assist individuals, who might be company directors, shareholders or heads of family businesses, as well as intermediaries such as private banks, fiduciaries and family offices. Our team operates from Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland. Outside our four home markets, we regularly work with foreign law firms to handle cross-border matters that are further afield.

What is the most important thing STEP does, in your opinion?

STEP brings practitioners with the same professional focus together, so they can share knowledge.

You will be speaking at the STEP Benelux conference in October. What will you be speaking on and what are the main issues?

Belgium’s beneficial ownership registers, and the challenge of privacy for family structures.

What do you most like about your job?

I enjoy contact with clients, colleagues and peers.

.. and what do you feel is most worthwhile?

What’s most worthwhile to me is adding value to family businesses by providing a tailor-made legal and tax structure, and encouraging them to stay creative and innovative.

What would you say to a young person thinking of a career in this industry?

Go for it!

Which sectors are likely to see the strongest future growth, do you think?

Any sector where people can be creative and innovative.

What about jurisdictions?

Any jurisdiction that can offer flexible legislation, in line with recent trends and new challenges.

What trends do you see in the global private wealth sector at the moment?

I would say that investment opportunities that fit with such global trends as digitisation, sustainability, urbanisation, and climate control will do well.

Which social media channels do you use?

I use LinkedIn.
