60-second interview with Ulf Gibhardt

Ulf Gibhardt , 7/11/2017

Dr Ulf Gibhardt TEP is a Notary, Lawyer, Tax Advisor and Partner at Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

What does your firm do?

Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH has 10 offices in Germany and six internationally, and focuses on legal and tax issues.

What has STEP done for you, individually, or as a business?

STEP has provided me with a very fine international network of highly skilled service providers in the field of succession planning and inheritance administration.

What is the most important thing STEP does, in your opinion?

It provides a platform that allows me to find highly-qualified lawyers in different jurisdictions easily.

You will be speaking at the STEP Europe conference later this month. What will you be speaking on and what are the main issues in this area?

I will be part of a panel discussing the corporate governance and succession planning of family-owned companies. There are plenty of issues in this area, including conflicts of interest (success of the business v private financial interests), hard decisions to make (selling the family business v giving it to the next generation), and choosing the ‘right’ successor.

What do you most like about your job?

I enjoy being close to the entrepreneurial and/or high-net-worth individual and working on his or her succession, from the planning stage, right through to implementation.

.. and what do you feel is most worthwhile?

Putting all pieces of the legal and tax puzzle together and getting a thank you card from the astonished and amazed client!

What would you say to a young person thinking of a career in this industry?

Go for it. There is nothing more fulfilling than to figure out a sound solution for your clients’ succession issues.

Where do you see future growth, both in terms of sectors and jurisdictions?

With respect to legal tech, totally new areas of legal business will arise. Everybody who wants to stay in business should watch this very closely.

What do you feel are the main challenges facing your organisation at the moment, and how will you deal with them?

Succession cases with an international component are increasing, so you need an international network of experienced people, who can provide good services at a reasonable price.

Which social media channels do you use and why?

I use XING and LinkedIn.
