STEP Private Client Awards honour best in industry
STEP held its 2020/21 Private Client Awards in a virtual ceremony last night in London, with 700 guests attending from around the world.
The Private Client Awards have set the standard for excellence in private client practice since they first started in 2006. The Awards are open to lawyers, accountants, private bankers, financial advisors and trust managers worldwide.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a record number of entries for the Awards this year, with 319 submissions received from 27 countries. Our winners came from Canada, France, Jersey, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the UK, and the US.
Particular congratulations go to Forsters and Macfarlanes, which scooped two awards each. Forsters won International Legal Team of the Year (midsize firm) and Private Client Legal Team of the Year (midsize firm), while Macfarlanes won Contentious Trusts and Estates Team of the Year (large firm) and International Legal Team of the Year (large firm).
Carmen S Thériault QC TEP, of Norton Rose Fulbright in Canada, won the coveted Trusted Advisor of the Year Award, voted for by STEP members, The Geoffrey Shindler Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession was given to Filippo Noseda TEP, from Mishcon de Reya; and the STEP Lifetime Achievement Award to Judith Ingham TEP, from Withers.

Chair of the Judging Panel Mary Duke TEP said:
‘This has been a challenging year for all of us, but in judging these Awards it has been fantastic to see such a remarkable focus on delivering to the highest standards for clients; the awesome innovation going on in our field; and the incredible hard work and dedication of teams in delivering for clients. With so many worthy entries, we really had our work cut out choosing winners.’
STEP Chief Executive Mark Walley said:
‘We couldn’t come together in person this year, but we felt that it was especially important to celebrate all the best of the industry in such times. It is testimony to the resilience and adaptability of this profession that we had so many entries from firms and individuals globally who have all been doing amazing things. Huge congratulations to all our finalists and winners.’
STEP’s charity partner for the first time this year was the World Literacy Foundation. Donations from entrants and on the night raised over GBP60,000 for the charity, which helps to lift children out of poverty and transform their lives through literacy and access to educational resources.
The occasion was sponsored by Katten Muchin Rosenman, Rathbones, Royal Bank of Canada and Tilney Smith & Williamson.
- Entries for the 2021/22 Awards open on 1 February.
