Constant improvement

The Professional Development team at STEP reveal what’s in the CPD pipeline for the rest of 2013.

2013 will be a significant year in the development of STEP’s CPD provision for members. Over the next few months STEP is extending its member benefits to include members-only access to a selection of online professional development tools. Alchemy Performance Assistant (formerly Alchemy for Managers) is a performance-support tool authored by subject-matter experts on a range of management and leadership issues; the EBSCO database is a substantial collection of articles and reports across many areas of interest to professionals; and, to support your career development, we have the Career Innovation CIZone tool, a virtual career coaching support system.

Towards the end of the year, STEP will be launching a new CPD policy, which will give members options on how they manage their CPD. STEP members can stick with the existing CPD system based on a fixed-hours requirement or move to the new system, which enables members to do CPD that is relevant to them, benchmarked against their professional role. Whichever option you choose, STEP will offer a new online CPD planning and recording tool to help you manage your professional development more effectively and efficiently.

The resources will be flagged in STEP newsletters as they become available, and you will be able to access them through the CPD Centre, located in the Professional Development section of the STEP website.

CPD: quality assurance for members

There are significant benefits to undertaking and recording CPD in an active and deliberate way, aside from the obvious advantages of keeping yourself up to date with changing legislation and client-facing competencies.

Recording CPD can:

  • cement what you have learned by giving you a chance to reflect on it;
  • highlight any gaps in your knowledge or areas for further development;
  • assist in planning for future career roles;
  • give your company and the general public peace of mind that you take your development seriously to maintain your competence in the service of your clients;
  • act as a useful reference in your appraisal to assist with talks about career progression and development within your firm; and
  • enhance the credibility of your professional body, STEP.

In embracing CPD, each individual member contributes to their own brand and the brand of the Society. The credibility of that brand is highly dependent on the willingness of each professional to maintain existing, and embrace new, skills and knowledge in the service of their clients.

To support this end, STEP audits a percentage of the STEP membership (all membership categories other than students) as part of its quality assurance systems each year, and will do so again beginning this September. If you are asked to send in a CPD record please respond promptly or let us know as soon as you can if you have a query.
