17.00: How family enterprises are using wealth to build a great family
Family is the foundation for long-term business resilience. Drawing on interviews with family members from 100 large global business and financial families who have been successful for more than three generations, this talk will look at the four paths that such families take to build a family “tribe”, and how the family forms the foundation for business and financial succession and resilience. We look at four paths: creating shared purpose and identity; developing trusting, caring relationships; developing skills and commitment in the next generation; and having a positive impact on their community.

17.45: Family constitutions and charters – a case study interview
This session will present a case study involving a typical family situation that is designed to showcase how an advisor goes about identifying issues and dealing with them in family documents. Mock interviews with family members will explore what issues need to be considered, identifying areas of potential disagreement and how to deal with them, getting the next generation to “buy in”, and discuss the interaction with trustees, letters of wishes, shareholders’ agreements and articles of underlying companies. Also to be discussed is the extent to which documents should be legally binding.
